Majestic Holiday Amaryllis: Now is the time!

Halloween is just behind us and the holidays are coming fast. Amaryllis bulbs are an easy first step to holiday decorating.

  • Ease of Growth: Amaryllis is one of the simplest bulbs to grow indoors, making it a popular choice.
  • Best Bulbs for Display:
    • For optimal blooms, select the largest bulbs available.
    • Large bulbs typically produce two flower stems, each with up to four flowers around six inches in diameter.
  • Color Varieties:
    • Amaryllis blooms come in pink, red, orange, salmon, and white.
    • Bi-colored and Picotee types (which have contrasting edges) add a unique touch and make stunning indoor displays.
  • Holiday Bloom Timing:
    • In the past, Amaryllis bulbs bloomed unpredictably around Christmas.
    • Now, bulbs are pre-treated at 58°F for ten weeks to ensure reliable holiday blooms.
  • Planting Tips:
    • Use a pot at least one inch wider than the bulb’s diameter.
    • Choose well-draining soil, planting the bulb so one-third of it remains above the pot rim.
    • Ensure the soil surface is an inch below the pot’s edge to allow space for watering.
  • Watering Instructions:
    • Water thoroughly upon planting, then sparingly until the bud and stem appear.
    • Once the bud and stem emerge, water whenever the soil surface feels dry.
    • An average room temperature is suitable for growing Amaryllis.
  • Encouraging Re-blooming:
    • With proper watering and fertilization after flowering, some bulbs can re-bloom for one or more years.
    • Over time, bulbs may eventually stop flowering.
  • Display Tip: For a striking arrangement, plant three or four bulbs together in a larger pot.
