Lawns

Aeration
This fall, make life easier for your lawn by simply walking on it in a pair of golf shoes whenever you’re out in the garden. The small holes created by the spikes provide an effortless form of aeration, helping the soil breathe and making your lawn care efforts more effective.

De-thatching
De-thatching removes dead grass that forms a thick layer on your lawn, sometimes called “false earth.” This layer can harbor insects and diseases, worsening in warm, dry weather. Fall is the best time to de-thatch, as the lawn is less susceptible to damage. To de-thatch, you can rent a power de-thatcher or use a lawn groom rake if you prefer manual work.  When you are done, spray the area, filling your 20 gallon hose-end sprayer jar with a can of bear, half a cup of molasses, and half a cup of biodegradable liquid dish soap.  Spray this over 5,000 square feet of lawn.

Weeds

If weeds have been taking over your lawn, now’s the time to address them so you won’t be pulling them all up next spring. Fill a 20-gallon hose-end sprayer with one cup of biodegradable liquid dish soap and fill the rest of the jar with warm water. Spray the entire lawn on a bright, sunny afternoon between 1-3 PM, as these are peak hours for weed control. Afterward, apply a broadleaf weed killer to the freshly sprayed area, following the label’s instructions. You’ll be saying “goodbye” to weeds in no time.

Seeds

For thinning or patchy lawns, now is the ideal time for overseeding, starting new lawns, or sowing winter rye in southern and western regions. For faster germination, refrigerate grass seeds for 72 hours or soak them in icy water for 24 hours. Then, spread the seeds and watch them grow with vigor.  But now is the time, so don’t delay.

Feeds

Fall is the prime time to fertilize your lawn, ensuring it’s the first to green up come spring. Apply dry lawn food mixed with four pounds of Epsom salts per 5,000 square feet of lawn. Next, fill your 20-gallon hose-end sprayer with one cup of biodegradable liquid dish soap and the remaining space with a half-and-half mix of beer and household ammonia. Spray the mix over the fertilizer.
